Didier Deschamps believes that Kylian Mbappe has communication skills to excel as France captain who will replace Hugo Lloris.
PSG Kylian Mbappe named France captain
Lloris’ retirement from international football has left Les Bleus in need of a new captain, and Mbappe has received the goalkeeper’s support.
Last week, Lloris told Telefoot, “There is one player who is becoming more powerful in every aspect on and off the pitch, and even in the functioning of the dressing room, and that is Kylian Mbappe.”
France plays the Netherlands in Euro 2024 qualifying on Friday, and Deschamps was grilled repeatedly about the identity of the new captain during his press conference on Monday.
“I’m going to use these first few days with the group to discuss it with the players involved,” Deschamps said, echoing a similar response from last week.
“Kylian is obviously one of those players. So, the next time I see you, you’ll know a little bit more. In other words, on Thursday, the day before the game.
“I think if he [Mbappe] has one quality, in addition to all his other qualities, it’s that he’s someone who is pretty good, very good at communication. So, I don’t see that as a problem on that front. But I can’t tell you anything else because I haven’t decided yet.”
Deschamps not considering Mbappe’s recent performances
PSG were defeated 2-0 at home by Rennes on Sunday, with Mbappe captaining the team.
“I have a habit, and it is not now that I will change, for each player when they are in their club, I do not have the ins and outs,” Deschamps added.
“Of course, I follow the games. However, Kylian’s or any player’s situation at club level is not the same as his situation with the national team, so I will not be able to choose.
“It entails more in-depth discussions. There are various types of captaincy. He’s accepted the responsibility. There are various forms or rather possibilities, with some players being more expressive than others.
“I’m not going to look at the details because you also have to take into account the situation in which the club may find itself. These are elements that I lack. It’s not something I do on a regular basis.
“So that is Christophe Galtier, his staff, and his club’s responsibility. That is not something I consider.”
